MOGADISHU -- At least 20 people have been killed and about 25 others injured on Monday in fierce fighting on the outskirts of Somalia's central region of Mudug, an official said.

Abdirahman Ali Diriye, governor of Mudug region, told reporters that the inter-clan fighting broke out at the Towfiq village in the northwest of the Mudug region between two Somali clans over land disputes. Locals told Xinhua they heard heavy gunfire.(Somalia-Clash)

HELSINKI -- Some 100,000 Finnish employees in industrial sectors began a three-day strike on Monday to back up their salary demands.

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan -- At least 13 Afghan soldiers and policemen were killed in two separate explosions in the country's southern province of Helmand, provincial sources said on Monday.

In one incident, eight Afghan National Army soldiers and an assailant were killed when a terrorist attacked an army checkpoint in Nad Ali district on Monday morning. The Taliban militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Sunday afternoon, five policemen were killed and five others wounded in a possibly accidental explosion outside a police checkpoint along a dusty road in Sangin district, in the eastern side of Helmand, provincial governor Gen. Mohammad Yasin told Xinhua.(Afghanistan-Explosions-Toll)

WELLINGTON -- Five people were confirmed dead in a volcanic eruption in New Zealand's White Island in the Eastern Bay of Plenty of the North Island on Monday, with more casualties likely, the police said.

The five victims were among those rescued earlier, the police said, adding that more than 10 people were reported missing on the tourist island.
