KATHMANDU, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Nepal's 17-year-old swimming sensation Gaurika Singh has created a history by winning four gold medals alone in the ongoing 13th edition of South Asian Games (SAG) being held in Nepal.

Singh, widely known as Jalpari referring to water-angel, claimed the women's 100m freestyle title at Satdobato Swimming Complex, Lalitpur on Monday evening, beating her arch rival Shivangi Sharma from India.

The young player had already grabbed three gold medals in 200m and 400m freestyle, and 200m backstroke. She has also collected two silver and two bronze medals in the Games.

Singh has become the only athlete to win four gold medals for the country in SAG 2019. She had also been the youngest athlete of the Rio Olympic Games 2016 at the age of 13.

Briefly talking with media last week, Singh, who lives in London with her family, had said that she dedicates her medals to Nepal. Singh, who hasn't interacted with media much, shared her photo with medals in social media with the caption "speechless".

Up to Monday evening, the second last day of the 10-day-long event, Nepal has won 49 golds, following leader India which has got 139 golds.

The Himalayan country has grabbed 176 medals in total in the multi-sports extravaganza.

Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh have won 36, 30 and 18 golds respectively. Maldives has got one gold followed by Bhutan nil.

The 13th SAG is being held in three cities Kathmandu, Pokhara and Janakpur, attracting around 2,715 athletes from seven South Asian countries.

Nepal is hosting SAG for the third time, as it hosted the event under the banner of South Asian Federation Games for the first time in 1984 and second time in 1999. Enditem
