UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to resume talks with the United States on denuclearization, said his spokesman.

"We reiterate the secretary-general's call on the leadership of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to work for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and resume working-level talks with the United States," said Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman.

"Diplomatic engagement is the only pathway to sustainable peace and complete and verifiable denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula," he told a daily press briefing.

The DPRK's permanent representative to the United Nations, Kim Song, said in a statement on Saturday, "We do not need to have lengthy talks with the U.S. now and the denuclearization is already gone out of the negotiation table."

Kim's statement came in reaction to a protest by the current EU members on the UN Security Council -- Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Poland -- plus Estonia, the upcoming council member. The six EU countries on Wednesday condemned Pyongyang's missile tests and urged the DPRK to "engage in good faith in meaningful negotiations with the United States aimed at denuclearization."
