KIGALI, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Qatar Airways has agreed to take a 60 percent stake in Rwanda's new international airport project, which is valued at 1.3 billion U.S. dollars, the Rwandan government said Monday.
The airline signed an investment partnership agreement with the government of Rwanda for the airport project in the Rwandan capital city of Kigali earlier in the day, under the witness of Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
The new airport is being redesigned to accommodate 7 million passengers per year and will have the capacity to handle 14 million passengers annually by 2032, according to the Rwandan government.
Rwandan newspaper The New Times revealed in March that the Bugesera International airport was redesigned in line with global standards.
In August 2017, Kigali formally laid the foundation stone for the construction of the new airport, which will be built under a public-private partnership between the government of Rwanda and a Portuguese company on a 25-year concession with an optional 15-year extension. Enditem
