Interview: China calls for more support from developed countries in addressing climate change

MADRID, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- China called for more support from developed countries to developing ones in addressing climate change as ministerial-level talks kicked off at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) here on Tuesday.
Ministers from participating countries came to the conference hoping for a breakthrough in the fight against climate change.
Li Gao, head of the Department of Climate Change under China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment and deputy head of the Chinese delegation to COP25, told Xinhua that financing and support by developed countries to developing ones are always outstanding and crucial issues in climate talks.
Li said on the sidelines of the conference that developing countries are facing many challenges in addressing climate change. As the Paris Agreement had been reached and throughout the negotiations the developing countries had been asked to take actions, they need more support from the developed countries, which failed to provide enough support correspondingly.
"That would impede developing countries from delivering on their nationally determined contributions (NDCs). It is also not conducive to global joint efforts," he said.
The major task for the delegates is to discuss Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, the measures to promote voluntary international cooperation by paying a price on carbon, emission trading schemes and other market mechanisms.
In a white paper published ahead of the conference, China said that one of its focuses is to actively promote the completion of negotiations on the remaining issues of the implementation rules of the Paris Agreement.
"We hope that consensus will be reached quickly so that the Paris Agreement can be implemented fully and effectively. We hope that the congress would not deviate from this agenda," said Li.
Li said that China had called for more attention to be paid to climate adaptation, instead of focusing only on climate change mitigation.
"In this respect, our appeal is identical to that of the most developing countries," said Li.
"We are promoting that climate change adaptation should be paid more attention. We are also actively promoting international cooperation on climate change adaptation," he said. Enditem
