GHAZNI, Afghanistan -- An insider attack claimed the lives of 23 security personnel in Afghanistan's eastern Ghazni province on Saturday, head of Provincial Council Nasir Ahmad Faqiri said.

"Seven local security personnel who obviously under patronage of the Taliban outfit" opened fire on their colleagues on a checkpoint in Qarabagh district, where they were asleep, killing 23 on the spot and run away with their weapons," Faqiri said. (Afghanistan-Attack)

NEW YORK -- A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted 38 km SSE of Turangi, New Zealand at 0612 GMT on Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 66.71 km, was initially determined to be at 39.3173 degrees south latitude and 176.1262 degrees east longitude. (US-New Zealand-Quake)

WASHINGTON -- U.S. special envoy for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Stephen Biegun will visit South Korea and Japan in the coming week amid escalating tensions between the United States and the DPRK, said the U.S. State Department on Friday.

Biegun will travel to Seoul and Tokyo on Dec. 15-19 to meet his counterparts there and continue "close allied coordination" on the DPRK, according to a statement released by the department. (US-DPRK-Tension)

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan -- At least 10 militants have been confirmed dead as military aircraft pounded Taliban hideouts in Dasht-e-Archi district of northern Afghanistan's Kunduz province on Saturday, district governor Nasrudin Nazari said.

The airstrike, according to the official, was conducted in Shurab area of the restive district early Saturday morning, killing 10 militants on the spot and wounding eight others. (Afghanistan-Air Raid) Enditem
