BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed higher Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.56 percent at 2,984.39 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.54 percent higher at 10,158.24 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 179.67 points, or 0.65 percent, to 27,508.09 points on Monday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 27,473.32 and 27,715.93. Turnover totaled 79.84 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 10.25 billion U.S. dollars).

SEOUL --- Seoul shares ended lower Monday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 2.10 points, or 0.10 percent, to settle at 2,168.15. Trading volume stood at 368.5 million shares worth 4.4 trillion won (3.8 billion U.S. dollars).

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Monday as investors took profits after the Nikkei surged 2.55 percent late last week on eased concerns about the outlook for the global economy.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 70.75 points, or 0.29 percent, from Friday to close the day at 23,952.35.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market's indicator, the S&P/NZX 50 index, dropped 0.13 percent to 11,227 on Monday.

The drop was led by Enprise Group Limited, a leading provider of business solutions based on advanced software platforms. It went down 11.11 percent to 0.8 NZ dollars (0.53 U.S. dollars), while Blis Technologies Limited, a biotechnology company that manufactures advanced probiotics for the mouth and throat, jumped 6.25 percent to 0.051 NZ dollars.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 2.24 percent lower on Monday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 176.03 points to 7,701.60. The all-share index went down by 80.18 points, or 1.72 percent, to 4,581.89. Enditem
