TEHRAN, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Iranian parliament on Tuesday approved the establishment of a special economic zone (SEZ) in the southern port of Jask, located to the east of the Gulf.

Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Eslami said that the long-awaited parliament approval would help spur economic growth in the areas to the east of the Gulf and near the Sea of Oman, the Press TV reported.

The Iranian government has massive development plans for the port, including the construction of an oil export terminal to allow crude delivery out of the Strait of Hormuz, the report said.

Iran is still lagging behind in efforts to reach the goals of its "maritime economy" plans, Eslami said.

The development of ports like Chabahar, located on the Sea of Oman, and Jask would help Iran take back its share of international trade from its rivals in the region, he added.

The creation of a SEZ in Jask would allow Iran to set up industrial parks and production hubs in the region, where domestic and foreign investments are expected to pour in once the U.S. sanctions are eased, the Press TV report said. Enditem
