YAOUNDE, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- An outbreak of cholera has killed 25 people in the last two months in Idabato, a locality in Bakassi Peninsula in Cameroon, local health officials said on Tuesday.

"This is the second time we are coming to this locality since the outbreak of cholera. In addition to those who unfortunately died, we have dictated 325 cases who are undergoing treatment in treatment centers," Southwest Regional Delegate of Public Health, Ebongo Zacheus Naji told reporters.

Naji led a rescue team to the locality and said the situation was under control.

Medical sources told Xinhua that many people admitted in local hospitals are suffering from diarrhea.

A treatment center has been set up in the area with support from the World Health Organization and the Red Cross, according to Naji.

The oil-rich Bakassi Peninsula is inhabited by over 200,000 people.

Cholera spreads through contaminated food and drinking water, causing diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. There is a high risk of cholera mainly in Cameroon's Far North region, but cases have also been reported in the commercial capital, Douala. Enditem
