Eritrean refugee wins int'l Sea of Galilee Marathon

JERUSALEM, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- The 22-year-old Gabriyesos Tachlowini, an Eritrean refugee, won Israel's 43rd international Sea of Galilee Tiberias Marathon on Friday in two hours, 14 minutes and 57 seconds (2:14:57).

Tachlowini, who lives in Israel, is included in the Athlete Refugee Team of the World Athletics international governing body.

He is also supported by the Refugee Athlete Support Program of the International Olympic Committee.

Israel's Amir Ramon finished second on 2:25:40, ahead of his compatriot Muket Fettene on 2:29:20.

At the women's marathon, Bracha Deutsch, Israel's first Jewish ultra-Orthodox female professional athlete, won at 2:32:25.

The 30-year-old Deutsch, mother of five, was born in the United States and immigrated to Israel in 2008.

In the coming months, she will try to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to be held this summer, but since the competition will take place on Saturday, the Sabbath day in the Jewish religion, she will not be able to compete.

Israel's Hagar Cnaani (2:46:56) and Limor Gotfried (2:56:00) finished second and third, respectively.

The Tiberias Marathon has been held annually since 1977, the race also includes half marathon and 10km runs, as well as a 1km school children run.

A total of 7,000 runners from 34 countries and regions participated in the races. Enditem
