NAIROBI, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Kenya is confident it will be ready to stage the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Nairobi in July despite slow repair work at the venue.

Athletics Kenya president Jack Tuwei said the country will also look forward to dominating in the championship and winning the most medals.

With the season starting early with cross country and indoor competitions, Tuwei said on Sunday Kenya has enough talent to contest the highest stage and will be good to win on home soil.

"We are confident that the team that will be selected for the games will retain the title (Kenya topped the table at the last edition) and that is why we are working hard now to have the best athletes identified across the country," said Tuwei.

Athletics Kenya has since identified talent camps across the country to nurture the young boys and girls, the majority still in school to be able to come up with the best team for the championships.

The World Under-20 Championships will be staged at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani in Nairobi from July 7 to 12.

Over 80 countries and regions are expected to have their best stars on parade in Nairobi with several teams including Germany, China, Britain and USA hopeful to stage their camps in Kenya.

Qatar, Bahrain, Turkey and Azerbaijan already have working training camps in Eldoret.

"There are vibrant training camp the country with the sole purpose to help identify and recruit a team that will represent Kenya in the championships," said Tuwei.

Tuwei said the Local Organizing Committee is working round the clock to deliver a world-class event.

In Tampere, Finland in 2018, Kenya reigned supreme to win 11 medals (six gold, four silver and one bronze) edging out giants U.S. as the best country in the championship. Brazil came in second with 12 medals, while the USA settled for the third position with 28 medals. Enditem
