LIMA, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people were killed and another 40 injured after a bus crashed into other cars in south Peru on Monday, said head of local health department, Dember Munoz Lozada.

According to the official, the accident occurred around 00:41 a.m. local time (0541 GMT) in the Andean province of Caraveli in the Arequiba Department when the bus was traveling from Lima to the city of Arequipa, located about 966 kilometers south of the Peruvian capital.

The government head of Caraveli province Arturo Montesinos reported earlier that 10 people died at the scene of the accident when the bus crashed head-on into other three minibuses.

Preliminary investigation by the Peruvian authorities indicated that the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to speeding when he was driving over 100 kilometers per hour. Enditem
