MAPUTO, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- More than 1,200 people were evacuated from their residences in areas under alerts of flooding in the Mozambican central province of Zambezia, authorities told national television TVM on Tuesday.
The evacuation, partly compulsory, was carried out to reduce human loss, as some of the residents refused to leave and some of them even built shelters in trees in order to stay in the risk areas, according to the report.
The government allocated two boats to evacuate people with their belongings.
Ana Cristina, Director of the National Emergency Operations Center, said four sailors were sent as well to the two districts (Namacurra and Maganja da Costa), which are currently at high risk of flooding, to ensure the operation.
Preliminary data shows that 224 families in the two districts have been resettled to safe areas, as the operation continues. Enditem
