THE HAGUE, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- United States international Sergino Dest has left the training camp of Dutch soccer club Ajax in Doha, Qatar, on Thursday due to the tensions between his country and Iran.

"He didn't feel comfortable," Ajax explained in a statement. The 19-year-old defender Dest had requested to leave the training camp himself and flew back to the Netherlands on Thursday morning.

After the United States killed Major General Qassem Soleimani, commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps Quds Force, in an airstrike in Baghdad on Friday, tensions in the Middle East grew. Last week the United States Soccer Federation decided to cancel a January training trip of its national team to Qatar.

Dutch soccer clubs Ajax and PSV are currently holding a training camp in Qatar to prepare for the second half of the 2019-20 season. Both clubs are in close contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch embassy to monitor the security situation in the region. Enditem
