LONDON, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's intention to step back from royal life dominated newspaper headlines in Britain Thursday.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said in a statement that they plan to work to become financially independent and split their time between Britain and North America.

The decision was made "after many months of reflection and internal discussions," read the statement released Wednesday, even though they had not reached any agreement with the Buckingham Palace.

The Buckingham Palace responded with a statement later saying discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex "are at an early stage" and "these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."

The Queen was understood to be disappointed that the couple rushed to put out the "personal message", which marks a second blow to the Royal Family since the Duke of York stepped down from his public role, British newspaper the Times reported.

The Daily Mail called it a "royal bombshell special issue", while the Sun declared it "Megxit."

The Financial Times was more focusing on the couple's desire for "financial independence."

Royal historian Kate Williams said it will be difficult for Harry and Meghan to lead "normal" lives, as media interest in them will increase after their unprecedented move.

Last October, the couple publicly revealed their struggles under the media spotlight since they got engaged in 2017. Enditem
