TOKYO, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Friday as technology-linked issues rallied with sentiment underpinned by solid gains on Wall Street overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 110.70 points, or 0.47 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 23,850.57.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 6.11 points, or 0.35 percent, to finish at 1,735.16.

Local traders said that investors took cues from U.S. shares advancing overnight, with reports of robust iPhone sales giving technology-related issues a boost.

They added the yen's softer tome versus the U.S. dollar also helped underpin the market and helped lift export-related issues, which tends to buoy the broader market, as a weaker yen sees exporters' profits augmented when repatriated and overall competitiveness enhanced in overseas markets.

Adding to an upbeat market mood, market strategists also said that concerns abating over an escalation in tensions between the United States and Iran also helped propel cyclical issues, while solid earnings reported by both FamilyMart Co. and Seven & i Holdings Co. helped lift domestic-demand driven retail issues.

Among technology issues finding favor, industrial robotics maker Fanuc climbed 2.4 percent, while Screen Holdings jumped 4.1 percent. Taiyo Yuden, meanwhile, closed the day 2.6 percent higher.

As for retail-oriented issues, FamilyMart gained 2.8 percent, while rival convenience store operator Seven & I Holdings closed out 3.7 percent higher.

Heavily weighted Fast Retailing, operator of the Uniqlo chain of casual clothes stores, weighed on the market, however, falling 2.8 percent, after cutting its full-year group net profit forecast on slumping sales.

By the close of play, mining, pharmaceutical and machinery-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most, and issues that fell outpaced those that rose by 1,076 to 977 on the First Section, while 107 ended the day unchanged.

On the main section on Friday, 1,091.6 million shares changed hands, dropping from Thursday's volume of 1,146.56 million shares.

The turnover on the final trading day of the week came to 2,167.8 billion yen (19.78 billion U.S. dollars). Enditem
