MANILA -- The Philippines raised the alert level to 4 on a scale of 5 over the Taal volcano eruption on Sunday, saying that "hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days" as volcanic activity increased.

In a bulletin released at 7:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said "eruptive activity" at Taal volcano's main crater "intensified" as of 5:30 p.m. local time (0930 GMT) "as continuous eruption generated ash plumes of up to 15 kilometers" into the sky.

DUBAI -- Energy Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Suhail Al Mazrouei has said the alliance of the oil producing nations known as OPEC+ remains committed to a balanced oil market despite rising geopolitical tensions in the region, local daily newspaper the National reported Sunday.

More than 20 countries are committed not to raising prices but to delivering a balanced oil market and ensuring the world is well supplied, said the minister at the sidelines of a meeting in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.

CAIRO -- The Egyptian Cabinet of Ministers said on Sunday that the economic growth stood at 5.6 percent in the 2018/2019 fiscal year, compared with 5.3 percent in the 2017/2018 fiscal year.

An infograph published by the cabinet on its official Facebook page attributed the current growth rate to the increase of a number of key sectors, notably the telecommunications sector.

TEHRAN -- Iran's Foreign Ministry on Sunday summoned Robert Macaire, the British ambassador to Iran, for what it called the envoy's "unusual behavior" and "attending an illegal gathering" in Tehran.

"Iran handed over its formal protest to Macaire and the British government," the ministry's website said.

OTTAWA, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Pickering nuclear power station in the Canadian province of Ontario issued an emergency alert in error Sunday morning, the local power generating authority said.

An "incident" was reported at the station, which applies to people within 10 km of the facility, the provincial government said in a bulletin issued around 7:30 a.m. local time (1230 GMT). Enditem
