TOKYO, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Tuesday following U.S. shares' solid lead overnight, with investor sentiment also bolstered by a comparatively soft yen versus the U.S. dollar which lifted exporters and buoyed the broader market.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 174.60 points, or 0.73 percent, from Friday to close the day at 24,025.17.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 5.37 points, or 0.31 percent, at 1,740.53.
Iron and steel, electric appliance, and information and communication-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play. Enditem
