ISTANBUL, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- The head of the UN-recognized government in Libya and the United States ambassador to Turkey met in Istanbul on Tuesday, local media reported.

Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey David Satterfield discussed "common interests of the two countries", Haberturk, an online news portal reported, citing a source at the U.S. embassy in Ankara.

Haberturk noted that Sarraj arrived in Istanbul on Tuesday afternoon after attending the cease-fire talks in Moscow, which failed to achieve a resolution after Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the Libyan National Army, left the Russian capital without signing the deal.

The head of the GNA, meanwhile, inked the agreement.

The North African country has been torn by a raging civil war between the GNA based in the capital Tripoli and the Libyan National Army and its allies based in the east. Enditem
