ZAGREB, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Appeal for Systematic Climate Action signed by over 500 Croatian scientists was submitted on Tuesday to the government, the parliament and the Ministry of Environment Protection and Energy here.

The scientists claim that climate change is the most serious crisis that humanity has ever faced, so they urge the government and other institutions to take real measures to tackle this problem.

They have presented 11 demands which include an urgent declaration of climate emergency on the national level, raising public awareness of the problem and involvement of experts in policy-making related to the climate crisis.

The scientists are also seeking the implementation of programs that provide sustainable energy and lifestyle changes for Croatians to save energy, calling for solidarity among generations, races, religions and all countries in the world as a prerequisite for humanity to face the challenges of a climate emergency. They argue that small countries cannot be excluded from the global transformation towards a sustainable society.

Croatia has been presiding over the Council of the European Union since Jan. 1. Climate changes are among Croatian priorities of the presidency, the government has claimed.

In October last year, prime minister Andrej Plenkovic said that it is necessary to work on economic development which is ecologically more viable to ensure a successful transition to a low-carbon and circular economy. Enditem
