BEIJING -- Major Chinese stock indices ended lower Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.54 percent at 3,090.04 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.15 percent lower at 10,972.32 points.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 111.55 points, or 0.39 percent, to 28,773.59 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 28,619.1 and 28,972.68. Turnover totaled 100.43 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 12.91 billion U.S. dollars).

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed flat on a negative note on Wednesday.

Markets staged a smart recovery in the fag end of the session and recouped most of its losses.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday, snapping a three-day winning streak, amid a lack of fresh trading cues and some consternation over global trade issues.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 108.59 points, or 0.45 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 23,916.58.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.41 percent, or 13.56 points, to close at 3,256.98.

A total of 1.31 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.11 billion Singapore dollars (about 822 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 229 to 183.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Wednesday at 4,068.20 points, up 31.97 points from Tuesday's finish.

Among a total of 353 issues traded, 210 registered gains and 94 incurred losses while 49 remained unchanged.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 967.56 points on Wednesday, up 0.56 points, or 0.06 percent against the previous trading day.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,585.14, up 4.54 points or 0.29 percent, and the Emas was at 11,303.17, up 19.97 points or 0.18 percent.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved down 5.85 points, or 0.37 percent to close at 1,581.05 points.

Some 19.54 billion shares worth 65.40 billion baht (about 2.17 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia's stocks finished lower on Wednesday, with the Cambodia Securities Exchange (CSX) Index down 8.88 points, or 1.17 percent, to close at 748.59.

A total of 2,983 shares worth 22.2 million riels (5,481 U.S. dollars) were traded, the CSX said.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 1.65 percent lower on Wednesday.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index decreased by 128.85 points to 7,664.40. The all-share index went down by 66.67 points, or 1.45 percent, to 4,539.30.

SEOUL -- Seoul shares ended lower Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) dipped 7.90 points, or 0.35 percent, to settle at 2,230.98. Trading volume stood at 734 million shares worth 5.8 trillion won (5 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market has closed higher on Wednesday, extending Tuesday's rally which saw the index hit a new all-time record high.
