MADRID, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona's French defender Jean-Clair Todibo is on the verge of sealing a loan move to German side Schalke 04 according to the Barcelona based sports paper 'El Mundo Deportivo'.

The 20-year-old is set to join Schalke on loan to the end of the season after which the German club will have the chance to make the deal permanent, although Barcelona would retain a future buyback option.

Todibo was photographed arriving at Dusseldorf airport from Barcelona and the arrival of Quique Setien as coach to replace Ernesto Valverde has not seen the club change its option about the youngster.

The move means the end to Todibo's brief and unsuccessful spell at the Camp Nou.

January 2019 saw Barcelona confirm they had reached an agreement for him to join them on a free transfer at the end of the 2018-19 season when his contract with his former club, Toulouse was due to expire. Toulouse's reaction to the news was to threaten to make the youngster train alone and Barcelona completed the transfer in January for a small fee.

The past year has seen Todibo make just four league appearances for Barca, as well as playing in their 2-1 Champions League win away to Inter Milan this season and with Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti and the Uruguayan Ronald Araugo ahead of him in the pecking order, his opportunities for the rest of the campaign also looked limited.
