KUNDUZ, Afghanistan -- Eleven policemen and 10 Taliban militants were killed in clashes in Afghanistan's northern province of Kunduz during Wednesday night, a local official said Thursday.

"Militants waged an attack with assault rifles, machine guns and rocket propelled grenades on an Afghan National Police checkpoint in Posta-i-Godam in the western edge of Khan Abad district headquarters. The clashes claimed the lives of 11 policemen and 10 militants," district chief Hayyatullah Amiri told Xinhua. (Afghanistan-Clash-Toll)

NEW DELHI -- More than 15 passengers were injured, a couple of them seriously, in a train mishap in India's eastern state of Odisha on Thursday, a senior Indian Railways official said.

No deaths have been reported so far. All the injured were admitted in a nearby hospital. (India-Train-Mishap)

MANILA -- Six died and six were injured when a fire broke out in a residential area in Tondo district in Manila City before dawn on Thursday, a firefighter said.

John Joseph Jalique, the chief investigator of the Manila Fire Department, said the dead include a mother and her three children who were trapped inside their house. Two others were found dead in other houses, he added. (Philippines-Fire-Toll)

TOKYO -- Japan confirmed its first case of pneumonia linked to the coronavirus, a government official said Thursday.

According to the official, a Chinese national tested positive for the virus in Japan. The virus has affected dozens of people in China since the outbreak began last December in Wuhan, eastern China. (Japan-Coronavirus-Chinese) Enditem
