RIGA, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Shareholders of RB Rail, the Baltic joint venture coordinating Rail Baltica transnational railroad project, have elected Latvian nominee Anri Leimanis as chairman of the company's supervisory board, according to a statement released by RB Rail on Thursday.

Ahti Kuningas, deputy secretary-general for transport at the Estonian Economics and Communication Ministry, and Karolis Sankovski, chief infrastructure manager of the Lithuanian national rail company, have become vice-chairmen of RB Rail Supervisory Board, the company said.

Leimanis, a corporate management expert, joined RB Rail Supervisory Board in June 2019 as an independent member. He is also an independent member and vice-chairman of Latvia's leading mobile operator Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT).

As chairman of RB Rail Supervisory Board, Leimanis intends to focus on "renewing the RB Rail corporate strategy and targets, reinforcing the management board with high-caliber professionals as well as ensuring effective oversight of management's performance".

Under Leimanis' leadership, the company's supervisory board will reassess the organizational structure to align it with the Rail Baltica project's current maturity stage, evaluate opportunities to improve the risk management system and focus on communication with the member states of the project, EU institutions, suppliers as well as RB Rail staff, according to the statement.

In November 2019, RB Rail Supervisory Board appointed Latvian executive Agnis Driksna the company's interim CEO.

Rail Baltica is a double track, European standard 1,435 mm gauge electrified railway for passenger and freight transport to be built from Tallinn via Riga to the Lithuanian-Polish border. The overall length of the railway will be 870 kilometers. The total cost of Rail Baltica project is estimated at around 5.8 billion euros. Enditem
