MUMBAI, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Mumbai will keep its restaurants, malls, multiplexes and retails outlets in gated communities like mill compounds and integrated commercial complex open 24 hours and seven days, effective from Jan. 27 following a state government decision late Friday.

"The decision to allow commerce to continue through the night will popularize hospitality and tourism and improve perception of the city in the eyes of foreign tourists." said HRAWI Vice President Gurbaxish Singh Kohli.

Mumbai being the political capital of India's South western state of Maharashtra and also the country's financial hub, he said the association has been trying to make it a global tourism destination.

"This decision holds the potential to increase employment opportunities by at least 25 percent in the city and eventually across the state," said Kohli, adding that retailers could offer discounts to post-midnight shoppers and theatres could offer lower priced tickets for late night movie shows.

The decision was taken at meeting attended by Mumbai Municipal Commissioner, the City Police Commissioner and senior officials from both departments, along-with representatives of shopping malls, hotels and restaurants, including the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI).

It is now up to the stakeholders to optimise this additional operational window to attract customers, with the law in place, said a city civic official.

HRAWI is a 68-years-old association with members from various restaurants and smaller hotels up to 5-star deluxe categories. Enditem
