MAPUTO, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- President of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi on Saturday called on all the members of his new cabinet to strive for the economic growth and development of the country, as the ministers took office in both a troubled period and the transition to prosperity.

The president sent the messages in his speech to the 16 new ministers who read the term of office and signed their commitment to the president and Mozambican people in Maputo.

"You have assumed your positions in a period of transition of the country, from economic growth towards the development in its fullness. The availability of resources remains a challenge but there are conditions to use creativity to work and achieve the established objectives," said the president.

Nyusi said the new government has the responsibility to consolidate the progress in different domains, such as agriculture, health, financial inclusion, energy access, education, and there are challenges that must be faced.

The president promised that in his second term the government will continue giving priority to traditional productive sectors, without relegating other sectors particularly social sector to the secondary plan.

"The government that was sworn in today should work so that the country can have a much more diversified and competitive economy, intensifying intervention in productive sectors for generating income and job opportunities," said the president.

The president encouraged his cabinet to materialize the five-year governance plan, which is dedicated to developing human capital and social justice, and to strengthen a sustainable management of natural resources and environment.

Nyusi also said the government "must continue to be ruthless with corruption," which is a "silent disease" that "affects business and the ranks of Mozambique in international positions, stopping citizens from enjoying economic and social stability." Enditem
