ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat on Monday reiterated Africa's common position in support of a full and unconditional ceasefire and the respect for the United Nations arms embargo in the war-torn Libya.

The Chairperson of the 55-member pan-African bloc, in a statement issued on Monday, emphasized the crucial imperative to activate "a full and unconditional ceasefire, the respect for the UN arms embargo and the need for violators to face sanctions."

Mahamat further reiterated "the return to an inclusive Libyan-led and owned political process that includes an effective follow-up monitoring mechanism," an AU statement, which was published on Monday shortly after a high-level conference on Libya that was held in Berlin, Germany on Sunday.

The AU Commission Chairperson also stressed that the pan African bloc's position concerning Libya "is clear - no military solution can solve the conflict, and any solution must include a Libyan-led political process with inclusive dialogue."

Mahamat attended the Berlin conference on Libya, it was noted.

The AU High-Level Committee on Libya, which was established back in 2011 shortly after the ongoing crisis in Libya began, is expected to convene a follow up meeting in Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of Congo, later this month on Jan. 30 in a bid to assess the evolution of the situation in Libya, ahead of the upcoming African Heads of State and Government Summit, slated for Feb. 9 to 10 at the AU headquarters in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, according to the AU.

Libya has been torn by fighting between rival armed factions since 2011. Enditem
