PHNOM PENH, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- A week-old elephant calf, found alone last week in the Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary in northeast Cambodia's Mondulkiri province, died on Monday despite experts trying to save it, Environment Ministry spokesman Neth Pheaktra said on Tuesday.

"We regret and are saddened by the death of this female elephant calf after days of caring," he told Xinhua.

Mondulkiri provincial environment department said in a press release that the elephant calf was found on Friday and died on Monday morning due to stomach and mouth illnesses.

The press release said the elephant had fatigue, did not move, did not eat fodder, and did not drink water a day before it died.

The experts believed that its herd abandoned the baby elephant because of its serious illness, the press release said. Enditem
