Afghan fighting kills 6 including 2 security personnel in northern province

FAIZABAD, Afghanistan, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Six fighters including four militants and two security personnel have been confirmed dead as clash erupted between government forces and Taliban militants in Wardoj district of northern Badakhshan province on Tuesday, a provincial government official Zalmai Khan said.

The clash, according to the official, flared up after a group of Taliban militants attacked a police checkpoint in Pul-e-Sangani area of Wardoj district early morning, and police returned fire, forcing the militants to flee after leaving four bodies behind. Three more militants were wounded in the fighting, according to the official.

Two police were also killed in the firefight, the official further said.

Taliban militants who are active in parts of Badakhshan province with Faizabad as its capital 315 km northeast of Kabul have yet to make a comment. Enditem
