DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Fire damaged equipment at a gold processing plant at Buzwagi in Tanzania's northwest Kahama district in Shinyanga region, an official said on Tuesday.

Duma Mohamed, Commissioner for the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force in Kahama district, said the fire broke out at 11.45 a.m., damaging most of the equipment for processing gold.

Mohamed said preliminary investigations indicated that the fire might have been caused by rising temperatures.

He said the value of damaged equipment was yet to be established although most of the equipment was burnt out.

Kulwa Malunga, a supervisor at the Buzwagi gold processing plant, said he spotted a thick smoke coming out of one of the plant's fuel tanks and immediately alerted the fire brigade that rushed to the scene and put out the fire after it had already damaged most of the equipment.

On January 7, the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) issued an alert over extreme temperatures in some parts of the east African nation. Enditem
