BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.28 percent, at 3,060.75 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.08 percent higher at 11,072.06 points.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going up 0.21 percent, or 6.76 points, to close at 3,253.93.

A total of 2 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.09 billion Singapore dollars (about 807.63 million U.S. dollars). Gainers outnumbered losers by 209 to 205.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Wednesday with a decrease of 0.16 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index decreased by 1.07 points, reaching 679.71 points after closing.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed up 355.71 points, or 1.27 percent, to 28,341.04 points on Wednesday.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Wednesday, as investors bought back issues on dips helping the benchmark Nikkei stock index top the psychologically important 24,000 line.

MANILA -- Philippine shares closed 0.03 percent higher on Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 27.56 points, or 1.23 percent, to settle at 2,267.25. Trading volume stood at 595.6 million shares worth 6.2 trillion won (5.3 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market closed firmly higher on Wednesday, after a lacklustre start to morning trade.

At the close of trade, the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 66.40 points or 0.94 percent at 7,132.70, while the broader All Ordinaries index rose 68.50 points or 0.95 percent at 7,249.00.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended lower here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,577.98 down 9.35 points or 0.59 percent, and the Emas was at 11,277.71 down 41.96 points or 0.37 percent.

JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Composite Index (IHSG) closed on Wednesday in the red zone.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 991.46 points on Wednesday, up 5.09 points, or 0.52 percent against the previous trading day.

More than 152.3 million shares worth nearly 3.6 trillion Vietnamese dong (155 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange. Specifically, foreign investors bought over 21.7 million shares totaling 787 billion Vietnamese dong (34.2 million U.S. dollars), and sold approximately 18 million shares totaling 709 billion Vietnamese dong (30.8 million U.S. dollars).

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 106.28 points on Wednesday, up 0.69 points or 0.65 percent from the previous trading session.

Nearly 24.9 million shares worth approximately 239.2 billion Vietnamese dong (10.4 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Wednesday. Specifically, foreign investors bought 570,315 shares valued at over 6.3 billion Vietnamese dong (275,340 U.S. dollars), and sold 712,804 shares valued at roughly 3.6 billion Vietnamese dong (156,010 U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Wednesday moved down 0.35 points, or 0.02 percent, to close at 1,574.59 points.
