LUSAKA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Zambia saw an increase in the number of cybercrime recorded last year, signifying increased adoption of mobile and internet services, the country's information and technology regulator said on Wednesday.

The Zambia Information and Technology Authority (ZICTA) said its Cyber Matrix Database which was used to profile the perpetrators and victims had shown a rising trend.

Ngabo Nakonde, Manager Corporate Communications, said 791 complaints regarding social media abuse were recorded since January 2019, with January and February recording the highest number of complaints compared to a combined total of the remaining months.

According to her, the increase in cybercrime could be attributed to the rapid adoption and uptake of mobile and internet services in Zambia, coupled with globalization which has created opportunities for both users and criminals.

Pornography-related cases were the most reported followed by cyber bullying, with women accounting for the largest number of complainants, she added. Enditem
