SYDNEY -- The world-famous sails of the iconic Sydney Opera House turned red on Thursday, to celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome the Year of the Rat.

Now the largest Spring Festival anywhere outside Asia, Aussies have fallen in love with the traditions of the Lunar New Year and it's expected that over 1.5 million people will attend more than 100 events over the 16-day period. (Australia-Chinese New Year)

MANILA -- China has donated 1 million yuan (around 144,000 U.S. dollars) to support communities affected by the eruption of Taal volcano, the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines said on Thursday.

CANBERRA -- Flights have been canceled at Canberra's airport for much of Thursday as bushfire posed threat to the east of the Australian capital.

The blaze, started Wednesday afternoon in Redwood Forest of Pialligo, was fanned up by strong wind on Thursday morning and merged with a second fire. (Australia-Bushfire-Flight cancellation)

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aisha Farooqui reiterated on Thursday that Pakistan firmly supports the one-China principle, stressing that Taiwan-related affairs are China's internal affairs.
