WHO provides tons of medical supplies to Libya's Benghazi

TRIPOLI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday said it delivered tons of medical supplies to the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi.
With the support of Britain's Department for International Development (DFID), a shipment of more than 96 tons of medical supplies has been delivered to Benghazi, WHO said.
These supplies include medicine for chronic diseases, such as asthma, hypertension and diabetes to treat more than 200,000 people for over three months, WHO added.
Due to years of armed conflict and instability in the country, Libyan authorities are struggling to provide proper healthcare services in Libya.
As public hospitals and medical centers lack basic medicine and provide little services, Libyans resort to highly expensive private clinics for medical care.
The UN-backed government and the east-based army have been fighting over controlling the capital Tripoli since early April last year.
The fighting killed and injured thousands of people and displaced more than 150,000 civilians, and also negatively affected healthcare sector in Libya. Enditem
