JERUSALEM/GAZA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army said on Sunday that it struck a Hamas military post after a projectile and explosive balloons were sent from the Palestinian enclave into southern Israel.

The military said that the strike in the southern Gaza Strip was a retaliation for the mortar and balloons, which hit open fields without causing injuries.

No Palestinian group declared responsibility for the rocket attack.

The cross-border fire came hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for Washington for the unveiling of U.S. President Donald Trump's "Deal of the Century" for Mideast peace.

The Palestinians have already rejected the deal as biased and announced "a day of rage" to protest the plan. Enditem
