CHICAGO, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- General Motors (GM) announced on Monday that it will invest 2.2 billion U.S. dollars in the production of all-electric trucks and SUVs in a Detroit area plant.

The assembly plant in Hamtramck, north of Detroit, will build GM's first all-electric pickup in late 2021. The venue will be the U.S. automaker's first fully-dedicated electric vehicle plant, GM said in a statement.

Cruise Origin, a shared, electric and self-driving vehicle unveiled in San Francisco last week will also be produced in the same plant.

"Through this investment, GM is taking a big step forward in making our vision of an all-electric future a reality," GM president Mark Reuss was quoted as saying.

According to GM, this investment will create more than 2,200 jobs when the plant is fully operational.

GM will also invest additional 800 million dollars in supplier tooling and other projects related to the launch of the new electric trucks.

The Detroit-Hamtramck plant currently operates on one shift of production and builds the Cadillac CT6 and the Chevrolet Impala, with some 900 employees.

GM said that renovations will begin at the end of February to prepare for the transformation. Enditem
