Albania unveils first gender equality index report

TIRANA, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Albania presented "Gender Equality Index 2020" report, the first of its kind in the country, here at a ceremony, the Albanian Telegraphic Agency reported on Tuesday.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Health and Social Protection Ogerta Manastirliu and Director of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) Virginija Langbakk.

Speaking at the ceremony, Manastirliu said that gender equality and empowerment of women and girls are priorities of the Albanian government.

According to the minister, this report is the basis for any initiative to measure achievements and set realistic objectives in terms of gender equality, empowering women and girls, reducing gender gaps and inequalities and equal access in services.

"This is the first step Albania will take in this regard towards its aspiration to become a member of the European family," Manastirliu added.

For her part, Langbakk congratulated Albania on its first Gender Equality Index and said that it will enable the country to monitor progress on gender equality.

"Albania's high score in the domain of power is particularly noteworthy," Langbakk said.

According to the report, Albania's score of 60.4 points is slightly below the European Union (EU) average of 67.4 points, ranking the 17th place among 28 EU countries, as well as Serbia and North Macedonia.

In the domain of power, Albania's score is 60.9, placing the country the 6th among EU countries, and Serbia and North Macedonia, thanks to a high representation of women in political and economic bodies. Enditem
