LAGOS, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Health authorities in Nigeria are investigating a "strange disease" that has claimed four lives in the north-central state of Benue, officials said Thursday.

The disease, whose symptoms include headache, internal heat, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach ache, weakness of the body, and swollen stomach, had killed four persons with 15 others hospitalized as of Wednesday, Sunday Ongbabo, the state health commissioner told reporters in Makurdi, the state capital.

It was recorded at Oye-Obi in Obi area of the state, the official said, adding that the ministry had already dispatched a team of doctors to the affected area to ascertain the nature of the disease.

Ongbabo said they were investigating the situation to find out whether it was Lassa fever and also considering other options.

The commissioner calls on the public to remain calm as the government was working hard to contain the situation.

Andyson Egbodo, the newly President of Igede National Youths Council, also confirmed that the state government had dispatched a medical team to handle the alleged epidemic.

Egbodo called on the state and federal governments to urgently do all within their powers to arrest the situation. Enditem
