RAMALLAH, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Palestine on Thursday stressed that its only goal is to realize peace based on justice, international legality and the two-state solution.

"Our aim is a genuine, lasting and comprehensive peace," said the Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization Saeb Erekat.

Our plan is based on "international law, international legality, security council resolution," Erekat said, calling for "a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the 1967 borders."

The elements to secure a lasting peace in the region are not present in the U.S. peace plan unveiled by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, said Erekat, also the chief Palestinian negotiator since 2009.

Erekat unraveled that the U.S. peace plan, known as the "Deal of the Century," is the same as a plan that Israeli prime minister's team of negotiators handed to the Palestinians in 2012.

Palestinians, who immediately rejected the plan, said the plan does not respect international law, international legitimacy resolutions or the internationally-recognized terms of reference for the Palestinian-Israeli peace process.

In response to Trump's announcement of the plan, Palestinian Present Mahmoud Abbas said that he will launch measures to change the "functional role of the Palestinian Authority."

Erekat refused to disclose to reporters any details about concrete steps regarding changing the Palestinian Authority's functional role, but said that Abbas has sent a message to Netanyahu warning the consequences of the plan on both sides.

He said that political and diplomatic steps will be taken, starting with the urgent Arab League meeting in Cairo on the issue on Saturday.

"What we are trying to do is to achieve international consensus behind us, behind President Mahmoud Abbas, in his determination to achieve peace based on international law," explained Erekat. Enditem
