ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- A landslide in a gold mine killed at least 16 people in southwestern Eritrea, state media outlet Eri-TV reported on Friday.

News of the landslide, which occurred on Jan. 18, came out almost two weeks later due to the mine's remote location, Eri-TV said.

Three others are still missing and an additional 15 were injured.

All the victims were gold miners, Eri-TV said.

Authorities have been trying to close the mine, a traditional one, since 2014, because of safety fears, but locals didn't heed official warnings and continued operating. Enditem
