MAPUTO, Jan.31 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed, and several others still trapped underground on Thursday night due to the collapse in a gold mine in the province of Manica, in central Mozambique, the national radio station reports on Friday.
The Secretary of State in Manica, Edson Macuacua, told Radio Mocambique (RM) that the group of miners, reportedly young Mozambican and Zimbabwean nationals, were inside the mine at a depth of 20 meters when it collapsed.
"Some work is being done to ascertain the circumstances in which the incident occurred. At this point, the information is not conclusive that seven or more of our fellow citizens might have lost their lives," Macuacua told RM on Friday.
The governor of Manica, Francisca Tomas, who also visited the accident site, sent a message of condolences to the victims' families and asked the local political chiefs to be vigilant against illegal mine explorers. Enditem
