MOSCOW, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Armed Forces will receive a series of modern weapons in the next few years under a current armament program, First Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko has said.

"Irrespective of the western economic sanctions, we will continue creating technologically independent weapons systems capable of efficiently opposing potential means of attack of any origin, even most modern, hypersonic ones," he said in an article recently published in the Radioelectronic Technologies journal.

Krivoruchko said that serial deliveries of new RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, which should replace the Voyevoda heavy missiles in the Strategic Missile Forces, will begin in 2021.

The new missile, which has a launch mass of 208.1 tons and a payload of about 10 tons, can hit targets at ranges up to 18,000 km, he said.

Krivoruchko recalled that the Russian military successfully tested the S-500 Prometey anti-aircraft missile systems last year, which will be ready for supply to the Armed Forces in 2020.

The main task of the S-500 is to intercept medium-range ballistic missiles at a range of up to 3,500 km as well as intercontinental ballistic missiles, he said.

The deeply modernized strategic missile carrier Tu-160M2 will make its maiden flight in 2021 and its deliveries to long-range aviation units should begin in 2023, he said.

According to Krivoruchko, the Russian Defense Ministry plans to purchase 10 such missile carriers by 2027. Enditem
