LONDON, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Lecturers and other staff in Britain's 74 universities plan to stage a fresh round of strike for 14 days in February and March over disputes on pay and pensions, the University and College Union (UCU) has said.

Starting on Feb. 20 and escalating each week, the strike will culminate with a week-long walkout from March 9 to 13, affecting around 1.2 million students, said the union on its website.

The disputes center on the sustainability of the Universities Superannuation Scheme -- one of the largest principal private pension schemes for universities and other higher education institutions in Britain -- and rising costs for members, as well as on universities' failure to make significant improvements on pay, equality, casualization and workloads, said the union.

UCU members at 60 universities walked out for eight days in November and December last year, affecting around 1 million students. This next wave of strikes will affect another 14 universities and an additional 200,000 students. Enditem
