BEIRUT, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Philippe Goffin said on Wednesday that Belgium will support Lebanon economically following Lebanon's reform program that maintains the trust between the two countries, the National News Agency reported.
"We know that reforms are not easy but all countries have to go through such stages sometimes and this requires political courage," Goffin said during his meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Nassif Hitti in Beirut.
"Reforms can be painful for people at the beginning but they often pay off later on, so we stand in support of Lebanon in these reforms," Goffin added.
Meanwhile, Hitti thanked Belgium for its support through the UN Interim forces in Lebanon in addition to its efforts in hosting a big number of Lebanese university students who have succeeded in integrating in the Belgian society.
He also emphasized the need to boost trade between Belgium and Lebanon in a way that would create more balance for Lebanon.
"We should focus today on increasing our productivity in the industry and agriculture sectors in addition to exerting more efforts to boost our exports," Hitti said.
Goffin arrived in Lebanon for a short official visit and met earlier with Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab to discuss local and regional developments. Enditem
