MANILA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Thursday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The institute said the offshore quake, which struck at 9:40 p.m. local time, hit at a depth of 47 kilometers, about 85 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos municipality in Davao Occidental province.
The quake, which was tectonic in origin, was also felt in some towns in Davao City, General Santos City and Sarangani province in the southern Philippines.
Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected. However, it added that the tremor is not expected to cause damage.
