COLOMBO, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's navy rescued 15 sea turtles entangled in a fishing net while patrolling off the coast of Talaimannar in northern Sri Lanka, local media reported Tuesday.

State-owned Daily News reported that the navy patrol had encountered a group of sea turtles trapped in a fishermen's net while conducting routine patrols. The Navy officers had acted swiftly to release the sea turtles.

Sri Lankan navy patrols routinely crack down on illegal forms of fishing and trade in marine products.

Five out of seven species of sea turtle that are listed as endangered can be found off the coast of Sri Lanka.

Sea turtles are protected by law in Sri Lanka. Enditem
