MADRID, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas will be a candidate to be the President of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), according to a report on Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.

The network reports that Casillas has informed Spain's Upper Sports Committee (CSD) of his decision to stand against current RFEF President Luis Rubiales in the elections, which are programmed to be held in the autumn of this year (although Rubiales has asked for them to be brought forward to before this year's European Championships).

38-year-old Casillas, who has been with Porto since 2015, could bring his vast experience as a member of the Spanish national team into play after representing his country on a record 167 occasions and Cadena Ser reports that he has been in contact with former Spain teammates Carles Puyol and Andres Iniesta to discuss his bid.

Casillas would be seen by many as a candidate who could help to end the poor relations between the RFEF and the Spanish Football League La Liga, whose respective Presidents - Rubiales and Javier Tebas have crossed insults on several occasions.

However, the lack of organizational experience of the 2010 World Cup winner could be a factor against him and his close association with Real Madrid, for whom he made over 720 appearances, would also lead to some viewing his candidacy with suspicion as it could give more influence to the already powerful club.
