WASHINGTON -- The Trump administration on Friday expressed optimism about a possible peace deal with the Taliban that could lead to gradual withdrawal of U.S. troops after over-18-year war in Afghanistan.

BERLIN -- China and the European Union (EU) have agreed on an array of key agendas for this year, said Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday.

The two sides have agreed to strive to finish the talks on a China-EU investment agreement and initiate feasibility study on a free trade deal this year, Wang told a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

They will work out a five-year cooperation plan and push for aligning the Belt and Road Initiative with the EU's Eurasia connectivity strategy, he said, adding the two sides will also explore the establishment of a China-EU green partnership and carry out cooperation in the digital sector.(China-EU-Wang Yi)

YANGON -- Twenty students at a village primary school were injured in a mortar attack by the local insurgent group Arakan Army in Myanmar's Rakhine state, said a release from the country's Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services late Thursday.

The attack was meant to target a group of Myanmar military personnel on mission at the Buthidaung township. One mortar hit the village school, injuring students playing in front of the school, the release said. (Myanmar-Mortar Attack)
