WASHINGTON -- China is sparing no effort to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, a challenge to both China and the international community, by adhering to openness and transparency, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai said.

"So we always have, as one of our basic principles, openness and transparency," Cui said in an interview with National Public Radio on Thursday. "We believe openness and transparency will give people more confidence, will give them more awareness about the virus, what the real risks are and how to prevent them." GENEVA -- The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday said that the international joint mission with China on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is moving forward, with the full team expected to reach China over the weekend.

Speaking through an online video system from Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the WHO chief told a press briefing here that the team consists of 12 international and WHO experts and a similar number of their Chinese counterparts. (Geneva-WHO-COVID-19)

WASHINGTON -- The United States is increasing the additional duty rate imposed on aircraft imported from the European Union (EU) to 15 percent from 10 percent, effective from March 18, the Office of U.S. Trade Representative announced Friday.

After World Trade Organization ruling on aircraft subsidies last year, the United States levied additional tariffs on a wide range of EU goods, which took effect on Oct. 18, a move that has fueled trade tensions between the two sides. (US-EU-Tariffs)

MEXICO CITY -- A shootout took place on Friday in a rural area in the state of Michoacan in western Mexico, leaving at least eight people dead and one person injured, local authorities reported.
