TRIPOLI, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Head of the delegation of the European Union (EU) to Libya on Monday called on the Libyan warring parties to end the ongoing violence in the country.

Alan Bugeja made his remarks in a statement on the occasion of the 9th anniversary of the 2011 uprising that toppled Libya's late leader Muammar Gaddafi.

"I appeal to all those (warring parties in Libya) to put the interests of the people of Libya at first by ending the violence, and to sincerely engage in the process launched by the Berlin Conference," the statement said.

"This is the only way to resolve the ongoing conflict, and to resume a process of reconciliation indispensable to peace, stability, freedom and prosperity," the statement added.

The east-based army has been leading a military campaign since April 2019 in and around the capital Tripoli, attempting to take over the city and topple the rival UN-backed government.

The violence killed and injured thousands of people, and forced more than 150,000 to flee their homes.

Since the 2011 uprising and the fall of Gaddafi, Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political division. Enditem
